Why-Egypt gave Olympic athletes fake Nike gear

CAIRO, July 26 (UPI) -- The Egyptian Olympic Committee gave its 117 athletes fake Nike training equipment for the London Olympics, a synchronized swimmer said. Yomna Khallaf, 20, said shortly before the athletes headed to London, the committee gave them "funny things," Egypt Independent reported Wednesday. "I wear X-small but they gave

me Nike gear that was size double X-large," she told Cairo Stadium Radio. "They gave us a bag that has a Nike logo on the front, but the zipper has the logo of Adidas," Khallaf said. "We had to buy $2,800 worth of real things from Nike for the team to look good." Nike released a statement in response to Khallaf's complaint saying, "Nike is highly concerned that if these allegations are true, the athletes will have received products that do not meet Nike's quality standards. Nike's authorized distributor in Egypt has sent two official communications to the EOC on this issue and no response has been received.

Nice-Aussies smash world record- wearing the same team kit

Aussies once again proved they're the best in the world… at drinking and having fun. Last night 1,000 Australians broke the world record for the most people wearing the same team kit to show their support for the Australian Olympic team. The event took place at

the pub The Windmill on the Common in London. Organiser Louisa Galligani said the event was spread purely by word of mouth, and staff estimated by the end of the night they'd turned away another 2,000 people. The first 1,000 Aussies received a goodie bag which consisted of a free yellow t-shirt, black shorts and yellow socks. They were also lured to the pub by the prospect of a free sausage and beer (though they had to pay for that).Jack Brockbank, Guinness World Book of Records adjudicator, said that the hardest part was keeping all 1,000 Aussies still for 10 minutes for it to be considered a world record. Despite one or two streakers, they managed to smash the record. The previous record was set in 2007 by 537 people wearing volleyball gear in Poland.

Wow-Legally blind in 1 eye, sets World Record

Dong-Hyun, who is legally blind in one eye, broke his own archery world record Friday during the men's ranking round at the London Olympics. Im's score of 699 broke the previous 72-arrow record of 696 he set in May of this year. The 26-year-old archer has bad

vision in his right eye and is legally blind in his left. He said he wouldn't get too excited about the result because it's only the first round. The Koreans broke their 216-arrow world record with 2,087 points as Kim Bubmin and Oh Jin-Hyek placed second and third -- Kim also broke Im's old individual mark. France, China, the United States and Japan finished second through fifth in that order. Canada's Crispin Duenas placed eighth in the individual ranking round. The last country other than South Korea to win a gold medal in the men's team competition was the U.S. in 1996.

Funny-USA Olympics swim team sings 'Call Me Maybe'

As the Olympics begin in London, 'Call Me Maybe' is still topping U.S. charts. And in case you hadn't gotten enough of the sometimes awkward, sometimes hilarious (and often both) videos of the likes of Cookie Monster, Colin Powell, Jimmy Fallon or even Barack Obama in their own versions of Carly Rae Jepsen's monster summer hit, the Olympic U.S. swimming team has made one of their own.Three members of the women's team, Alyssa Anderson, Kathleen Hersey and Caitlin Leverenz, spearheaded the effort to get their fellow swimmers in on the fun.
Olympic spirit -Farmer cycles from China to London to see Olympics

A poor Chinese farmer says he has cycled to London to "spread the Olympic spirit," reports say. Chen Guanming, 57, spent two years on his three-wheeled rickshaw travelling from China through floods and freezing temperatures in 16 countries to arrive at his destination earlier this month, BBC reports. John Beeston of London said he spotted

Guanming looking lost and downhearted in the city's west end alongside his rickshaw. The farmer didn't speak any English and "burst into life" when Beeston spoke to him in Mandarin. "I'm a big fan of Olympic Games," the humble man from Jiangsu province in eastern China said. "I wanted to come here because I wanted the whole world to support the Olympics and be part of it." His painstaking journey — supported by donations and delivering packages en route — took him through floods in Thailand, up 7,000-metre-high mountains in Tibet and bone chilling -30 C temperatures in Turkey. He eventually arrived in London July 6 with dreams of attending the opening ceremonies.

What-Olympian is 8 months pregnant

LONDON — she’s shooting for two. A Malaysian woman who is eight months pregnant will compete in 10-meter air rifle at the London Games. She found out she would be a mother just days after she found out she would be an Olympian.Nur Suryani Mohammed Taibi is due in September. Perhaps feeling some of mom's Olympic excitement, the baby

is kicking, and between deep breaths Taibi will ask her unborn child for restraint during competition Saturday. "I will breathe in and breathe out and try to calm myself down and talk to baby: 'Behave yourself and help Mummy to shoot.' And luckily she understands. She always understands," Taibi told the Olympic news service. She said she is aware she could got into labor any moment — although she said she hopes to win an Olympic medal before the baby comes. If I won the medal, I will see this is as yours, as you helped Mummy so much," Taibi said, speaking of the baby. "Maybe you give me more strength, more stability and more confidence."

Olympics: Gender equality, uniform choice

LONDON, July 27 (UPI) -- Female athletes at the London Olympics have the right to choose skirts or shorts at the first Games in which both genders will compete in all events. Initial attempts to force female boxers and badminton players into skirts didn't go over well with the ladies, who will now be given their choice of uniform, The

Washington Post reported Friday. The Amateur International Boxing Association proposed the female skirt mandate to help TV viewers identify the separate genders, but the athletes said they believe there are plenty of other assets that set them apart. "I really didn't understand that," boxer Claressa Shields, 17, of Flint, Mich., told the Post. "It was to help separate the men from the women. But we got different names! Women got breasts! We got butts! Can't you tell which one is who?" "This is a pugilistic sport, a combative sport. And you want to put sex into it? For what reason?" asked Gloria Peek, 62, a member of the U.S. boxing team's coaching staff. "The skirt equates to sex; it equates to nothing else. How are you going to take that and put it into a gladiator sport? And what does that have to do with it?"
