A U.S. Army veteran has launched a $10-million lawsuit after an allegedly botched surgery forced him to have his penis amputated. Michael D. Nash, 61, underwent circumcision and penile implant surgery — usually used to treat erectile dysfunction — at the Veterans Administration hospital in Lexington, Ky., on Oct. 28, 2010. The lawsuit, filed against the federal government Tuesday, alleges a nurse put an ice pack on his penis to ease the swelling in post-op, and left it there for 19 hours straight. Nash was on heavy pain medication and only partially conscious at the time. His lawyer, Lawrence Jones, says the ice pack should have been removed after two to four hours. As a result, Nash's penis developed frostbite and gangrene, and he had to have five inches removed, Jones said. "If you can envision, on Day 1, you're looking at something red and irritated and burning, and over the course of the day, it goes to something that turns to a purplish colour that then turns to fully black," Jones said, adding his client was left with "this dark black rotting piece of the most important part of the body."

SARNIA, ONT. - A drunk driver from Michigan, who was so plastered she thought she was in Detroit when she crossed the Blue Water Bridge into Canada, was fined $1,500 in Sarnia court. Cassandra Rose Olbrys, 26, of St. Clair Shores, Mich. pleaded guilty Monday to the Sept. 16 impaired driving charge. Olbrys told a Canada Border Services Agency officer at 1 a.m. she did not want to come to Canada and thought she was in Detroit. She said she had been trying to go home and had not been drinking, but breath tests showed her blood-alcohol level was two-and-a-half times over the legal limit. Olbrys had no prior criminal record.

Olbrys should seek help in Michigan for the underlying issues that resulted in the offence, Justice Ann McFadyen said. The fine was above the $1,000 minimum for a first offence. Olbrys was ordered to pay the fine immediately.

PORT COLBORNE, ONT. - Marie Parks watched as a transport truck slammed into her house in this city Thursday night, right into the front room where she and her husband normally sit at night. "Someone was watching over me," she said, as firefighters, police, paramedics and neighbours milled around the scene after the 8:45 p.m. crash at the southern Ontario home she's called home for 40 years. Parks and her husband had gone to see a neighbour's truck shortly before the semi plowed into the home. Port Colborne fire Chief Tom Cartwright said the truck hit so hard, "it literally pushed the floor out of the back of the house."

OWEN SOUND, Ont. - A 200-plus-pound pumpkin has vanished from a community garden. Police said Thursday they will investigate the theft after members of Union Place, a Canadian Mental Health Association drop-in facility behind St. George's Anglican Church, discovered the pumpkin, eight watermelons and some squash were missing from the community-run garden. "The guys were really hurt" said site co-ordinator Teresa Pearson. "They are really disheartened. They worked for months. These guys started working in the gardens in May and we are just winding up." Pearson said she had arranged transportation to move the pumpkin next week, but someone beat her to it.

How-Woman forced to rob bank was dating gunman

A Target 7 investigation found more twists to what was an already bizarre report of an attempted bank robbery. A woman told police said she was forced to rob a bank by a masked man who threatened to kill her kids, if she didn't. As it turns out, the two were dating.

According to the criminal complaint, the woman was hysterical and so scared that the masked man was going to follow through with his threats, she refused to give any information.

Her co-worker ended up calling police.She walked into the New Mexico Bank and Trust at 9500 Montgomery on Aug 31. Police said the woman, who is a teller, told her co-workers a masked gunman was holding her children hostage at gunpoint at her home, and forced her to rob the bank.Her children are 13 and 8 years old.Albuquerque police lapel camera video captured her telling officers that she didn't know the suspect."How many were there?" the officer asked.
