Watch-man gets the plague from cat bite

An Oregon man has contracted the plague -- a disease that killed a third of Europe's population during the Black Death pandemic in the 14th century -- from a cat bite, public health officials have confirmed. The man in his 50s is in critical condition and under quarantine at a hospital in Bend. The unidentified man was bit on the hand while he tried to get a dead mouse out of the mouth of his outdoor cat on June 2. Lab tests confirmed the man suffers from the plague, the Crook County Health Department said Thursday night. He is reported to have the bubonic plague, which affects the lymph nodes, and has since spread to his bloodstream causing septicemia, a fever-inducing infection, and pneumonia. Plague bacteria is spread by fleas that have fed on infected rats and other rodents. The infectious disease is very rare in Canada and is treatable with antibiotics if caught early. The Public Health Agency of Canada said the last reported case in the country was in 1924. The World Health Organization reports 1,000 to 3,000 cases of the plague each year.

Why-Woman 'kept as sex slave'

Heather Walsh, here supported by survivor advocate Louise Nicholas (at left), says she was trapped on William Cornelius' farm for years against her will. Photo / APNA woman who alleges she was kept as a sex slave and regularly raped - even as she endured a painful miscarriage - has won a legal battle to allow publication of her name so she can share her harrowing story. Sex victims are

automatically granted permanent name suppression to protect their identities. But Heather Walsh successfully argued for her name to be published, saying she wanted the world to know her story. Farmer William Paul Cornelius, 79, lost his bid for name suppression after a final hearing in the Wanganui District Court yesterday. He first appeared in court in 2009, and was facing a total of 14 charges representing numerous rapes, unlawful sexual connection and abduction. After 25 hearings Cornelius was deemed unfit to stand trial as he had developed mild dementia. Yesterday, Judge David Cameron stayed all charges but after viewing all the evidence, concluded that using the civil test for liability Cornelius was probably a rapist. However, as he was not fit to stand trial, he was not convicted on any of the charges.

Cornelius left court yesterday a free man. But now his alleged offending against Ms Walsh can be revealed. Yesterday was the first time she had seen Cornelius since her escape. She said it was an overwhelming experience. She was disappointed her claims could not proceed to a trial, but was happy she could speak out publicly. Ms Walsh has been supported by sex abuse campaigner Louise Nicholas, a survivor advocate for Rape Prevention Education.

Wow-A wife's last wish urged husband to sleep with as many other women as possible

When Darren Cockle fell for his wife Sarah, he thought they were destined to grow old together. They’d met when Sarah was 20 and he was 25, got married and had two children – a girl and a boy. Life was sweet and he had no reason to think it wouldn’t stay that way. But three years ago his world fell apart when Sarah died of breast cancer, aged just 35. Sick with grief, Darren’s priority was

caring for Olivia, then aged three, and Sam, aged six. For months he struggled to handle his grief, while trying to care for his children and replace the mother they were missing so badly. In deep despair he almost gave up hope – until he remembered some advice Sarah had given him. In the days before her death she told him to enjoy his life without her – and that meant relishing his new found singledom.

“She suggested that I grieve for 18 months before moving on,” Darren, 43, recalls. “During that time she told me to go out and get as much ‘sympathy sex’ as possible. "She said it wouldn’t prove to be a problem as ladies would come out of the woodwork to comfort me, but she warned me not to get involved with anyone on my doorstep, including family and friends. It seemed an odd request from the woman he loved. But over time, Darren came to realise that it had been her way of making sure he didn’t crumble. “Sarah told me that she wanted me to be happy and find love again. "I said I didn’t want anyone else and that the only person I wanted, I was losing. But Sarah knew what she was doing. "I’d never had a purely sexual relationship with anyone until I became a widower.”

What-Couple married TWICE in one day... because she hadn't said 'I do'

A dream beach wedding had to be held TWICE – because the bride hadn’t said “I do”.Kelly Sweetman and Nathan Rees, both 25, had kissed and left the service in Cyprus when their wedding planner realised the bride had not said the crucial words. And they had to go through the ceremony again an hour later to make the marriage legally binding. Police Community Support Officer Kelly

explained yesterday: “Nathan said his vows, the registrar told him to put the wedding ring on me and then announced that we were man and wife. “I thought it was very strange I hadn’t said my vows but I didn’t say anything. I did notice all my guests looking very confused. "Nathan and I then signed the register and were about to have our pictures taken. “It was only when the wedding organiser overheard my guests saying that I hadn’t said my vows that it went a bit crazy. “The hotel had to call the county hall and get the registrar back out to the hotel. They had to re-decorate the wedding altar for us.”

She was lubed up, then locked up. A Florida woman was fine with bringing olive oil, and even PAM cooking spray, into the bedroom. But when her boyfriend brought up his former fling named Pam, she wasn't having it. When Barbara Hall, 60, asked her 45-year-old boyfriend to go to the kitchen for some "sexual lubricant," he obliged, according to police reports obtained by TC Palm.
