Paul Gutierrez can attest to some pretty bad dating horror stories. One time, a mail-order bride climbed out a window in the middle of their date. Another time, Gutierrez, 38, says he dressed up like a moose to catch a woman's attention, to no avail.

Things got so bad that he turned to charitable donations to find his future wife. The Elgin, Ill., native is offering half of his yearly income for one year, about $10,000 to $20,000, to the person who gets him a date with his future wife. He said he will donate to the charity of the person's choice, or walk across the country in a wedding dress to raise money for a charitable cause.

What-Men use flashy sports cars to attract women

It took the joint efforts of researchers at three universities - Rice University, the University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) and the University of Minnesota - to confirm that men who spend money on flashy items are looking for sex.

"This research suggests that conspicuous products, such as Porsches, can serve the same function for some men that large and brilliant feathers serve for peacocks," said UTSA's Jill Sundie, lead author of the paper. Men who are interested in short-term sexual relationships flaunt flashy products to charm potential dates. But the researchers said women are onto them.

The study showed that women found the Porsche-driving men more desirable as dates but not as marriage material.

"Women inferred from a man's flashy spending that he was interested in uncommitted sex," said the study.

 

Unlucky-Cursed number '39' haunts Afghan car owners

Afghanistan's booming car sales industry has been thrown into chaos by a growing aversion to the number "39", which almost overnight has become an unlikely synonym for pimp and a mark of shame in this deeply conservative country.

Drivers of cars with number plates containing 39, bought before the once-harmless double digits took on their new meaning, are mocked and taunted across Kabul. "Now even little kids say 'look, there goes the 39'. This car is a bad luck, I can't take my family out in it," said Mohammad Ashraf who works for a United Nations project. Other "39" owners flew into a rage or refused to speak when asked whether their car was a burden. No one is quite sure why the number became so contaminated so fast, but Kabul gossip blames a pimp in neighbouring Iran, which shares a common language with much of Afghanistan.
