Lady Nabs Europe’s worst marriage swindler (12 marriages)

BERLIN - A German woman helped catch a man suspected of carrying out scams against lovelorn women in Europe after she ended their whirlwind romance by hiding his only pair of shoes and calling the police.
Helena Logrippo met 49-year-old Guido Bannwart on the internet just before New Year’s Eve and spent four days with him before his requests for money made her suspicious, Frankfurt police spokesman Alexander Kiessling said.
He said the 48-year-old Logrippo first lent Bannwart 700 euros ($906.60) but began her own internet investigation when her lover asked for another 2,000 euros. She found a dozen victims who said they had been cheated out of a total of 500,000 euros by a man Bild newspaper has dubbed “Europe’s worst marriage swindler.”
“There was an international warrant out for his arrest and she helped us catch him,” Kiessling said, adding Bannwart was in custody and awaiting extradition to France where he is wanted.Kiessling said Logrippo asked her neighbour to take Bannwart’s shoes from outside her door and hide them so he could not run away when she called the police after her Internet discoveries dashed her dreamy love affair.
“He was my kind of guy — tall, strong with a great smile,” Logrippo told Bild newspaper. “It was love at first sight.”
No more Smoking-Police Raiding home

THIMPHU, BhutanBhutan police can raid homes of smokers in a search for contraband tobacco and are training a special tobacco sniffer dog in a crackdown to honor a promise to become the world's first smoke-free nation. Buddhist Bhutan, where smoking is considered bad for one's karma, banned the sale of tobacco in 2005, but with a thriving tobacco smuggling operation from neighboring India, the ban failed to make much of an impact.
But legislation passed in the New Year, granting police powers to enter homes, is set to stub out the habit, threatening five years in jail for shopkeepers selling tobacco and smokers who fail to provide customs receipts for imported cigarettes.

Internet Hero- Cross-eyed opossum

Heidi, the cross-eyed opossum, has surprised zoo officials with her international popularity, sparked by picture of the goofy-looking critter posted online a few months ago.
The 2 1/2-year-old opossum was found abandoned ousted an animal shelter in North Carolina along with her sister, Naira. Both opossums, as well as one male named Teddy, have been at the Leipzig Zoo since May and will go on display in July in an exhibit. The German newspaper Bild snapped preview shots of the animals to be featured in the exhibit in December, and pictures of Heidi went viral. Heidi currently has more than 80,000 friends on Facebook, and has inspired a popular German song on YouTube, written by Stefan Langner and performed by three little girls. The lyrics roughly translate to: “Heidi is so sweet. How nice that she exists. I fell so in love with her from the first." The toy manufacturer Kosen will begin selling stuffed Heidi toys in about two weeks.
Zoo officials have two theories about Heidi's ocular deformity - either it's related to the poor nutrition Heidi received in the U.S., or there are fat deposits behind Heidi's eyes pushing the eyeballs together, which can happen to overweight animals.
