Cheap thief-Potato pilferers perturb B.C. farmer

A Richmond, B.C., farmer says he's used to his crop of blueberries or pumpkins going missing along nearby walking trails, but the theft of 5,000 pounds of potatoes is going too far. Bill Zylmans says the stolen spuds, along with the damage to his farm, will set him back $5,000. He said thieves have uprooted plants in an area about the size of a football field. "It's the worst I've seen it," Zylmans said in a B.C. RCMP news release Thursday. Police said crop thefts are an annual problem, particularly with berries, but the quantities are usually small. "However, Zylmans believes the amounts being stolen now go beyond someone simply looking to stock the family pantry," police said in the release. "Some of the thefts have occurred in harder-to-access areas, whereas in the past they typically occurred along roadsides to trail ways adjacent to local fields."
Wow-Mass-massage record made in Thailand

Thailand has kneaded their way to a world record for the most massages given in one place. A total of 641 masseuses rubbed down 641 people for 12 minutes in a health ministry-organized festival Thursday in Bangkok to promote the country's booming massage industry. The Guinness World Record broke the previous record set by Australia in 2010 of 263 people massaged for five minutes.
What-Mounties slammed for watching free jail cell sex romp

VANCOUVER - The RCMP watchdog has berated four “voyeuristic” Mounties for watching female prisoners have sex in a cell. The Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP released its investigation report Wednesday into the conduct of Mounties involved in watching the sex romp at the Kamloops, B.C., RCMP detachment cells in August 2010. Ian McPhail, the interim chairman of the commission, said the four

RCMP members “lacked professionalism.” “The commission found that, by allowing the physical contact between the two individuals in custody to continue and engaging in voyeuristic behaviour, the RCMP members demonstrated a lack of professionalism and respect that not only offended the spirit of the RCMP’s policy on video monitoring of prisoners but was inconsistent with the RCMP’s core values,” McPhail said. “Further, we found that the senior member present demonstrated a marked lack of leadership by failing to intervene.” The investigation was launched Sept. 28, 2010, following a complaint by the Elizabeth Fry Society of Greater Vancouver, which alleged “senior staff at the detachment failed to manage personnel responsibly, and were complacent in the care and custody of inmates.”  The report noted Cpl. Rick Brown, the senior officer on duty at the Kamloops detachment, was in “awe or disbelief laughing” as he watched the women in their “drunk tank.”

Brown, Const. Evan Elgee, Const. Steve Zaharia and guard David Tompkins have been charged with breach of trust. The report, however, is independent from the criminal proceedings. Const. Bryce Fieghe, who also observed the encounter, is not facing charges. The commission made four recommendations, including that the RCMP amend its policy to provide guidance as to when circumstances are “serious or sensitive” and consequently, when an external investigation is needed. The report made four recommendations, including the RCMP amending its policy on what constitutes circumstances that are “serious or sensitive.” But in a letter addressed to McPhail, RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson rejected this particular recommendation. He did, however, acknowledge the behaviour of the officers in question was “unreasonable,” and added he was “deeply disappointed” in Brown’s lack of leadership. Louise Richards, executive director of the Elizabeth Fry Society’s Kamloops chapter, said she was satisfied the report determined the Mounties’ behaviour was unacceptable. “I’m hopeful this was just an isolated incident,” she said, adding she would be surprised if a similar incident took place again in Canada.
Nice-Two-faced cat gone viral

A rare two-faced kitty cat is turning heads. Venus has a unique face that's black with a green eye on one half, and orange-tabby with a blue eye on the other. The kitty has gone viral with more than 800,000 views on YouTube and more than 37,000 likes on Facebook in a matter of days. The owners, Florida couple Christina and Chris, appeared on the Today show in New York City Wednesday to prove Venus is the real deal. "We've heard everything from Photoshop to we've dyed half of her face," Christina, who did not want her last name used, told Today. "This is just the way she was born, that's it."
Why-Rob Ford's niece tweets 'don't dress like a whore'

TORONTO - Mayor Rob Ford’s niece apologized Thursday after telling women “don’t dress like a whore” to avoid being sexually assaulted. “I didn’t mean to cause such an alarm and I apologize if I did,” Krista Ford wrote in a statement sent to QMI Agency just before 1 p.m. “I just want women to be safe.

“What I meant to say was that women should take measures to protect themselves and be very careful not to place themselves or allow themselves to be placed in vulnerable positions that may compensate their safety. It’s important that the public knows that my comments do not reflect my family’s beliefs.” Ford - one of Counc. Doug Ford’s daughters - issued the mea culpa Thursday, less than 24 hours after she posted a message on her Twitter account giving advice to women shortly after Toronto Police held a press conference about a rash of sex assaults downtown. Krista Ford has been in the public spotlight before.

Ford made headlines last year when she signed up for the city’s new Lingerie Football League team, the Toronto Triumph.  She was named captain of the Triumph, but in October Ford and several of her teammates quit. Mayor Ford’s office has yet to comment on the latest incident, and Doug Ford could immediately be reached for comment. '

SlutWalk Toronto took to its Twitter account, @SlutWalkTO, Thursday to respond to Ford’s comment. “(Krista Ford’s) tweet was victim-blaming and misguided,” the organization tweeted. “That said, harassing, slut-shaming, name-calling, threatening her is not helpful.” In a second tweet, the group encouraged Ford to get in touch if she has any questions. “We hope you’re open to understanding why your statements upset people and learn,” the tweet concluded.
