Smart-Woman fights off shark with 'black belt punch'

A tourist in Hawaii survived an attack by a nearly four-metre-long tiger shark by giving it a taekwondo "black belt punch in the nose." Mariko Haugen and her husband, Don, were swimming with turtles in Maui last weekend when the shark came into view. "All of a sudden, it was like Hollywood. You see the big jaws coming at you. I can't say how terrifying that is," the Folsom, Calif., woman told local broadcaster ABC News 10. Haugen said she put her martial arts training to good use by giving the shark two jabs before it took off.
"She saw it a few seconds before it hit — and she gave it her best Tae Kwan Do black belt punch in the nose (sic)," Don Haugen wrote on Facebook. Her husband and another man nearby carried Haugen to shore. She escaped with wounds to her right hand and thigh, requiring about 70 stitches. Two women from Victoria, B.C., called for help and comforted her until the ambulance arrived. The Haugens have returned home and are in good spirits considering the close call. "I think we were unlucky, and really lucky," Don Haugen said.
Wow-Amputee to climb skyscraper with thought-controlled bionic leg
A New Brunswick engineer is heading up research on a cutting-edge bionic leg that will be worn by an amputee when he climbs more than 100 flights of stairs at a Chicago skyscraper this weekend. But this high-tech leg isn't a typical prosthetic -- it's controlled by thought. Zac Vawter, a 31-year-old software engineer from the Seattle, Wash., area, lost his right leg in a motorcycle crash in 2009. He's part of a pilot project involving Canadian and American researchers to develop an intuitive prosthetic that could be used by wounded veterans and other amputees years from now.
The prototype -- researchers are about five years away from clinical trials -- works by measuring electrical signals generated by Vawter's hamstring muscles. A motorized ankle and knee help synchronize the faux limb. "He's thinking about walking or he's thinking about going up the stairs, and then he naturally goes up the stairs," said project leader Levi Hargrove, a specialist in biomedical engineering at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. The Bath, N.B., native trained at the University of New Brunswick, which is also helping out with the $8-million U.S. State Department-funded research.

What-Dealership offers gun gift cards with cars

EASLEY, S.C., Nov. 1 (UPI) -- A South Carolina car dealership said it is offering $250 gift cards to a local gun shop to customers who purchase vehicles. General Manager Chad Henderson of the Mitsubishi dealership in Easley said the business' sign, "Free shotgun or rifle when you buy a car," actually means customers receive $250 gift cards to Sharp Shooters Gun Club and Range in Greenville, WHNS-TV, Greenville, reported Thursday. Henderson said the gift card scheme allows the gun shop to ensure all laws are followed when customers claim their prizes."We have the same requirements as any gun shop would have," Sharp Shooters co-owner Ted Landreth said. "They just can't come in off the street and say, 'OK. I'm here to get my gun.'"
Henderson said the promotion, which runs through next week, is a celebration of U.S. values and freedoms. "We believe we live in the greatest country in the world, and sometimes, when we get a chance, we like to express that," Henderson said. "What better way (than) giving away a shotgun or rifle

How a Flirty cop texts drunk driving accused

SARNIA, Ont. — A judge says a city police officer showed “utter stupidity” by flirting with a woman following her arrest for drunk driving, but found the woman guilty anyway. Marlee Dorinda Viggers, 21, was fined $1,500 for driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding the legal limit. She also received a one-year driving ban. Const. Robert Sparling, an eight-year veteran, conducted breath tests on March 6, 2011, that indicated Viggers had a blood-alcohol level nearly 2 1/2 times the legal limit. Some weeks later, Sparling and Viggers were at the same Sarnia bar when he sent her a text message that read, “If you buy me a beer, I’ll forget everything at trial.”
Viggers sent a return message, saying, “I wished it worked that way.” The text messages were offered up as exhibits by the defence at Viggers’ trial. The exchange included references to sarcasm and kidding, the court heard.  “I was joking,” Sparling said. Defence lawyer Ken Marley said the messages were “entirely inappropriate” and brought into question the officer’s evidence about the breath tests. Marley asked Sparling whether he showed a romantic interest in Viggers when the test was administered, and whether she rebuffed him. Sparling testified he showed no interest in Viggers before or during the testing, which was witnessed by another officer. He said his conduct at the bar had no impact on his involvement in the case.
What-Cell Phone Salesmen Arrested, Accused of Stealing Customers' Nude Pictures
BARTOW, Fla. - Two cell phone salesmen in Polk County are out of a job and facing serious charges after police say they stole nude pictures off a customers' phone and then bragged about it later. Investigators say one of the workers obtained the photos when transferring the customers' data to her new cell phone. A few days later, police say the workers showed off the photos to another customer who happened to recognize the woman. "To show them to a complete stranger is obviously a sign of them bragging about it," said Detective Sergeant David Wyant with the Bartow Police Department. Officers arrested Gregory Lampert on Wednesday. Police are waiting for the other employee, Joshua Stuart, to return from vacation.
"I would never want my cell phone to go out of my eye sight," said Dhiman Bhattacharjee, Owner of iPhone Repair of Lakeland. In his position, Bhattacharjee says he understands what he is entrusted with and follows one general rule of thumb.
