What this is showing is about 800 taxi drivers are reporting zero income and are claiming welfare,” Minnan-Wong said. “Eight hundred seems to be a big number ... You’ve also got over 100 burlesque entertainers -- I think those are strippers -- who are reporting zero income. That’s another interesting question.” While Minnan-Wong said some taxi drivers may really have zero income, he doubted they all did. “Eight hundred taxi drivers? I find that hard to believe,” he said. “If they are making money from driving a cab and claiming welfare, that’s just disgusting.” City auditor general Jeff Griffiths reviewed Toronto Employment and Social Services’ processes for verifying reporting of income, in particular the reporting of income by welfare recipients who have a business licence with the city. Next week, councillors will mull over seven recommendations the city could take to improve the system.
Fun-Couple caught having sex on restaurant patio
Police say a couple caught having sex on the patio of a Florida restaurant won't face charges for their interlude because none of the witnesses wanted to give statements to police. Police said they were called to Paddy Murphy's in Orlando after patrons saw Jeremy Calo, 32, and his date "having sex on a table in view of minor children," according to the report Tuesday night on Local 6 News. The report said the couple started making out and then it escalated. The outdoor table is in plain view of restaurant customers and passersby.
Restaurant manager Tom Murphy told Local 6 he warned the couple to stop and then called the cops when they didn't. Calo was arrested for fighting with Murphy and refusing to pay his $101 bill, but neither he nor his date were charged for the public sex acts.
Wow-Doctor traded Oxycontin for sex
A Winnipeg doctor traded Hillbilly Heroin for illicit sex, and billed taxpayers for the time he spent doing it. Dr. Randy Raymond Allan pleaded guilty to professional misconduct before the Manitoba College of Physicians and Surgeons on Sept. 11. In the report of the College's disciplinary tribunal, Allan said that billing Manitoba Health for the sex-trade visits was "horrible conduct, absolutely inappropriate." Allan was working out of a Kenora, Ont., clinic in early 2009 when he met Patient A in a massage parlour and paid her for sex. They began a personal relationship and began meeting outside of the parlour. That's when she told the doctor she was addicted to Oxycontin, and asked him for some -- supposedly to hold her over until she entered a Methadone program.
Their sexual relationship ended in August 2009, by which time he'd given the patient four prescriptions in exchange for sex. In November 2009, Allan began a similar process with Patient B. He met her in a massage parlour but soon after started trading Oxycontin prescriptions for sex instead of cash. Patient B told Allan she could no longer afford her Oxycontin addiction at street-drug prices, so between January and May 2010 he wrote her 23 prescriptions. "It is necessary to state in the strongest possible terms, that Dr. Allan's actions and behaviour were reprehensible," the College of Physicians and Surgeons wrote in a legal decision suspending Allan from medical practice for 18 months.
What more- Toronto cabbies, strippers collecting welfare
TORONTO -- Almost 800 Toronto cab drivers picked up welfare cheques from the city in the last two years. A report going to the city’s audit committee next week finds 1,539 people holding business licences from the city -- including 759 cabbies, 104 strippers, 170 holistic practitioners and 32 buskers -- collected around $20 million in welfare payments while claiming they had zero income between January 2010 and December 2011. Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong was quick to pounce on the report Tuesday saying it raises “some really interesting questions.”
